Sitting is the New Smoking

One of the worst things that you can do to your body is doing nothing.  Sitting is definitely the new smoking; it deteriorates your health just like a smoking habit. When you sit constantly, it affects your mood, mental sharpness, increases your risk for illness, and affects your sleep patterns.   

Yet still, even knowing this, it’s really easy to lead a sedentary lifestyle.  If you work a typical desk job, you spend the majority of the day seated in a chair.  If you don’t work out after work, then you might retreat to your home to sit down or lay down to unwind. Once bedtime rolls around, it’s lights out.


Here’s an undisputed fact:  the body deteriorates when it is inactive. Sitting results in less energy and low motivation.  The Mayo Clinic found that constant sitting causes high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and increased cancer risks.

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that adults get 150 – 180 minutes of physical activity each week.  Please know that the gym isn’t the only way to be active. 

Here’s a few much simpler ways to squeeze in daily exercise:

  • Add stretch breaks into your workday to improve circulation and joint health.
  • Exercise during commercial breaks while watching your favorite TV show.
  • If you’re too tired to make it to the gym, have a backup plan, such as a bodyweight workout or a workout DVD at home.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Use part of your lunchbreak to be active by getting outside, doing a set of squats, etc.
  • Take a walk in your neighborhood

Regular activity will boost your health by improving circulation and joint health, lowering your resting heart rate, improving metabolic function and reducing stress. 

Don’t forget to try new activities occasionally. Variety and doability are the key to increasing physical activity and improving your health.
